Premier League side Birkirkara announced that a member of their senior team has tested positive for COVID-19.
This is the latest case that emerges from Maltese football after earlier this week fellow top-flight side Balzan revealed they had three players who contracted the virus while there are also a number of positive tests at other clubs such as Ta’ Xbiex, Sta Venera, Qrendi, Naxxar and Swieqi United.
The latest case was revealed just after the Malta FA announced that is still planning to start the Premier League and the Challenge as scheduled next month despite the rise in COVID-19 cases in Maltese football.
“Birkirkara FC has been made aware that one of its senior
team players has tested positive for COVID-19,” the club said in a statement.
“In view of this, the club has decided to cancel
all training activities until further notice.
“The player is in good health and has been in
self-isolation since he first showed symptoms. “The club has taken all
precautionary measures and all those who attended training with the same player
have been asked to self-isolate and get tested.

“When the go-ahead from the health authorities is
received and is reassured that all players and staff members are well and
healthy, training will resume.”
