Waterpolo senior leagues suspended until August 22 due to COVID-19 case

Under-17, Under-20 leagues postponed indefinitely

The Acquatic Sport Association announced on Friday that it has extended the suspension of 2020 National Leagues to at least August 22 due to the ongoing rise of COVID-19 cases in Malta.

Earlier this week, the local governing body of acquatic sport was forced to postpone the National League match between San Ġiljan TUM Invest and Birżebbuġa Freeport after one of the players involved in the game had tested positive for COVID-19.

However, governing body met again on Thursday and they decided to further push back a return to competitive action to ensure that individuals who were in contact with the player found positive will have enough time to complete their quarantine period.

“Following a Presidents’ Meeting held yesterday, it was decided to postpone all Senior Competitions up to and including Saturday, August 22, 2020,” the governing body said in a statement.

“It was also decided to postpone the U-17 and U-20 leagues indefinitely so as to minimise the exposure of players competing with different junior and senior teams.

“These decisions were taken after a water player tested positive for COVID-19.

“The postponement of the senior competitions coincides with the quarantine period of any persons in contact with the positive player.

“Another meeting is scheduled to be held next week to evaluate the current situation and the way forward.”
