Steve Borg, Loza Abera clinch MFPA top awards

Defender Steve Borg and forward Loza Abera clinched the Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) top awards during the Awards Night, on Wednesday night.

Gżira United player Borg, who last year spent his final season at Valletta, was named the MFPA Best Male Player. The Malta defender played 18 league games with 3 goals and 1 assist before the top-flight was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Abera, on her part, won the MFPA Best Female Player award. She was Birkirkara women’s top scorer with 33 goals, spearheading the Stripes to a fourth straight title and the domestic Super Cup as well which was played at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali.

The women’s game took centre stage in these awards with two unique awards going to Dorianne Theuma and Pierre Brincat.

Malta women’s national team captain Theuma was given a special accolade for her 100th cap – the first women to reach a century of games. Brincat, who is the Director of Women’s Football, was given a merit award for his commitment in the women’s game.
