Driven by Anton Cassar, favourite Vivaldi Du Vivrot won Sunday’s major event at the Marsa Racetrack.
This was the final of the 2020 edition of the prestigious Tazza l-Kbira competition for class Premier trotters on a long distance of 2640m.
This final, organised with the financial support of Bank Of Valletta, formed part of the 34th meeting of the year and which consisted of ten races all for trotters.
Eleven trotters lined up for the class Premier final. Alf De Melandre (Rodney Gatt) was the fastest horse at first, opening a small lead from Paparazzi (Mark Bonnici) and R.G.’s Thunderbolt (Mario Fenech).
With a lap to go Vivaldi Du Vivrot (Anton Cassar) started to increase its pace from the outside and took the lead in the final straight to seal its fourth win in a row easily by two lengths from Glenn Boko (Charles Camilleri), Output Pressure (Clint Vassallo) and Alf De Melandre (Rodney Gatt). Vichenko Chef (Noel Baldacchino) ended in fifth place.
After this final, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Clifton Grima and Charles Azzopardi, on behalf of the sponsors, presented the winning trophies to Anton Cassar and Keith Spiteri and Salvu Spagnol the driver and the owners respectively of the winning horse.
Sunday’s card included also a normal class Premier race, also on a long distance. This race produced a keen duel in the final straight between Liam Dana (Charles Camilleri) and Waikiki Man (Owen Scicluna).
It was Liam Dana which gained its first win in Malta after increasing its speed in the last 400m. Bara Min (Redent Magro) and Buzz Sly (David Ellul) followed home in that order.
