Following an impressive 2-1 win over Floriana last weekend, Santa Lucia claimed another three points thanks to a 2-0 win over neighbours Tarxien Rainbows – a win which enables Oliver Spiteri’s side to move to a more comfortable position.

With Kevin Ante Rosero, Alan da Silva Souza and Jamie Zerafa, amongst others, in excellent form, they were clearly a better side during the first half, taking the lead towards the end.

During the second half, they suffered some pressure from their opponents but managed to keep them under control and eventually secured victory with another goal.

Tarxien suffered their third defeat in four matches and although the team’s performances are an improvement over last year’s campaign, this will probably be another difficult season for the Rainbows.

Santa Lucia held the initiative during the first half, going close on 4 minutes with a Rosero powerful drive which was blocked by Daniel Fernandes.

Tarxien replied with a Jurgen Debono freekick from the right from which Eduardo Rosado Souza attempted a header but Andreas Vella managed to neturalise.

However, on 15 minutes, Santa Lucia threatened once again with a Victor Luis Prestes Filho effort which was tipped into a corner by Fernandes.

Six minutes from the end of the first half, Santa Lucia managed to break the deadlock. Following an assist by Jamie Zerafa, Alan da Silva Souza served Kevin Ante Rosero inside the area and the latter slotted the ball past Daniel Fernandes.

In added time, the Tarxien goalkeeper performed a good save on an Alan da Silva freekick from the left.

On the restart, the Rainbows were an improved side and on the hour, Vanger Conceicao had a good effort deflected into a corner and the resulting corner from the left by Brandon Muscat was headed into another corner by a defender. Tarxien maintained the pressure and off a cross by Muscat from the right, Vito Plut headed just wide two minutes later.

However, on 68 minutes, Sta Lucia doubled the score.

Michael Camilleri, who had just replaced Leandro Motta, received an assist by Alan da Silva Souza and delivered a cross from the right with Anderson do Nascimento Carneiro deflecting the ball past Daniel Fernandes for an own goal.

This goal killed Tarxien’s hopes of earning something from the game and Oliver Spiteri’s side were soon back in control.

In fact, three minutes from time, Santa Lucia could have added another when Jamie Zerafa advanced upfield and served Kevin Ante Rosero with an intelligent backheel pass but the Colombian striker’s effort was blocked by the Tarxien goalkeeper.
