It was a memorable afternoon for Maltese women’s football as two Malta internationals faced each other at the Stadio Enzo Ricci of Sassuolo.
Sassuolo’s Haley Bugeja and Kailey Willis of Hellas Verona crossed paths in their Serie A Femminile encounter.
Bugeja returned on the scoresheet for Sassuolo after converting from the penalty spot to help her side seal a 4-1 win. This was the fifth top-flight goal for the former Mġarr United player in this campaign.
The Malta forward was also protagonist in Sassuolo’s second goal after her assist enabled Kamila Dubcova to grab a personal brace.
Willis, on her part, made her maiden Serie A appearance after coming on in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Shona Zammit and Emma Lipman were the first Malta players to meet in a Serie A game after last year’s encounter between Pink Bari and Florentia San Gimignano.
Elsewhere, Ylenia Carabott played for RCSC Charleroi in Belgium’s top-flight in their defeat against Leuven.
