Swieqi eye top spot as they face Raiders in women’s league

Title challengers Swieqi United will return into action this week as they face Raiders Għargħur in a game that could propel them at the top of the Women’s League.

The Oranges are currently second with 10 points after five games having chalked up three wins, one draw and one defeat.

Led by Keith Gouder, they could join Mġarr at first place as the Greens are leading on 13 points but having played an extra game.

Swieqi’s only draw came in their latest outing when they battled out a goalless stalemate against Mġarr.

Gouder’s clan have the second best attack with 17 goals, thanks to the contribution of Demi Magrin and Emma Xuereb who combined for nine goals together.

At the other end of the field, they conceded only two goals, as they have the second best defensive line in the league with Charlene Zammit and Chantelle Grech serving as defensive pillars flanked by youth fullbacks in Chloe Ann Ellul, Andy Zammit Mizzi and Jade Schembri who are often rotated in the starting line-up.

Raiders, on their part, are at the back of their second win of the season after beating Mtarfa 6-0 last week.

With six points in the standings, Raiders may be no match to the top teams of the league but with the number of youth players in their squad they will surely allow these girls to grow gradually at senior level.

Former Birkirkara player Leanne Micallef is their top scorer with two goals so far.

In the other game, Mosta and Kirkop United will rub shoulders eyeing for a win that could propel them towards their season objectives.

Mosta have chalked up three points so far and should they gain at least a point from this tie, it would help them put daylight between them and bottom side Mtarfa and edge closer towards the mid-table region.

The Blues were absent from last week’s fixtures after their game against Birkirkara was postponed, with their most recent encounter being the 4-0 loss at the hands of Raiders Għargħur a fortnight ago.

On the other side, Kirkop were beaten by Mġarr last week but the 2-1 scoreline reflects the strength of this year’s Reds team.

Having played four games, they have six points and with a win over Mosta they would join champions Birkirkara on nine points.

For the record though, Birkirkara have played three matches and will not be in action this week neither.
