BOV Player of the Match: Bojan Kaljevic (Mosta).
A Bojan Kaljevic penalty in the first half was enough for Mosta to overcome a wasteful Tarxien Rainbows and remain in the upper part of the Premier League.
In fact, the Montenegrin’s strike has kept Mosta in sixth place on 17 points, three behind leaders Hibernians but with a game in hand.
Winston Muscat’s Tarxien will feel hard done by with this result as in the second half they created numerous goal-scoring chances but failed to capitalise on them. The Rainbows remain third bottom on 8 points.
The early stages of the opening 45 minutes were fairly-balanced with both teams wary of each other.
Goal scoring chances were scarce with Mosta and Tarxien having a lot of possession in the middle of park without sparking the game into life.
The first noteworthy chance of the game dropped onto the feet of Kelvin Tulimieri who fired a thumping volley from close-range forcing Christoffer Mafoumbi to divert into corner.
Moments later, the Italian midfielder attempted a long-range effort but the ball sailed over the bar.
The breakthrough for Mosta came on minute 36 when defender Anderson floored Bojan Kaljevic inside the box with the match official ordering a penalty for Mario Muscat’s side.
Montenegrin striker Kaljevic made no mistake from the spot for his ninth goal of the season.
At the restart, Tarxien had a good chance to level terms but Vito Plut failed to connect on a Kyle Gatt’s cross from point-blank range.
The game ebbed and flowed with Tarxien desperately looking for an equaliser as Mosta’s compactness was denying them from being a threat in the offensive third.
Tulimieri could have wrapped up the win for Mosta when he attempted a lob over Fernandes just for the Tarxien custodian to block with his hands.
Tarxien replied with a Miranda Gomez’s strike which went inches wide from Christoffer Mafoumbi’s goal.
The Mexican midfielder let fly another strike but once again he could direct the ball past Mosta’s goalkeeper.
Nine minutes from time, Plut wasted a glorious chance to score for Tarxien when he darted inside the box before misfiring his shot the Rainbows kept lurking for a draw.
In the closing stages of the game, substitute Miguel Ciantar tried his luck from the penalty box but once again Tarxien could not find the net.
