Valletta FC have appointed António José Cardoso Mendes as their new first-team coach.
In recent days, the Times of Malta revealed that the Citizens were in talks with a 41-year-old Portuguese coach.
Valletta were looking to install a new first-team coach following the departure of Jesmond Zerafa and during the past few weeks, the club had made a shortlist of possible candidates for the job.
After a thorough evaluation, Mendes was put on the top of the list of candidates and earlier this week, the Valletta FC committee held talks with the former Vitoria Guimaraes coach.
Mendes arrived in Malta on Monday and led the team in his first training session as coach of the Lilywhites.
Mendes has enjoyed a long spell with Guimaraes where he worked with the club’s youth ranks, particularly from the U-17 up to the U-23 selections.
This season he was in Saudi Arabia where he is working as U-19 coach at Al Wehda.
Mendes will make his debut for the Citizens in their first match after the Yuletide recess against Ħamrun Spartans.
