Sliema Wanderers missed the chance to take the sole leadership of the Premier League when they were shocked by Mosta.
And what a shock they were in for. They were not only outpaced and outsmarted by Mosta but they were literally humiliated.
Jean Paul Farrugia received the BOV player of the month award before kick-off.
Mosta were the livelier side and nine minutes from the start, Kevin Tulimieri threaded a through-ball to Christ Ememe whose run had evaded the attention of the Sliema defenders. His grounder was blocked by the alert Jake Galea.
Mosta maintained their brisk start. A long pass from midfield threatened to unpick the Sliema defence as Bojan Kaljevic was first to the ball but the striker was blocked on time by John Mintoff.
Sliema responded immediately when Gilmar’s free-kick was pushed away by Christoffer Mafoumbi.
On 44 minutes, Muchardi started an excellent move as he chipped the ball to Kaljevic who returned the pass to the Italian with a clever back-heel. This neat one-two created an opening for Ememe on the left flank but the striker hit the ball wide.
The Nigerian forward redeemed himself with a wonderful goal three minutes after the break when he hit an excellent lob from the edge of the box that soared above the on-rushing Galea and into the net.
On 63 minutes Mosta doubled their lead from a penalty after Galea had fouled Kaljevic in the box. The Montenegrin striker drove the resultant penalty past Galea to put Mosta 2-0 ahead.
Four minutes later, Oscar Linton was beaten for speed by Ememe and in no time the ball was squared for Zachary Brincat who cashed in on Sliema’s frailties to make it an unbelievable 3-0 scoreline.
Six minutes from time, Sliema were awarded a penalty after Duane Bonniċi was deemed to have pushed Takanori Yokochi in the box. Farrugia scoreed with a rising shot as Mafoumbi dived the other way.
