Watch: Deguara joins Tokyo Excellence

In his latest move, Malta international Sam Deguara has joined Japanese B League Division three side Tokyo Excellence. This makes him the first Maltese player to ever play in Japan.

The move was confirmed in November by the club, and adds another country to his resume.

The 7’5 center who made his first move abroad in 2007, was playing in the Philippines with Alab Pilipinas in the Asean league before the covid-19 outbreak last year and had returned back in Malta working on his next move.

The 29-year-old had spoken to the Times of Malta back in October while covid-19 restriction had hampered his move back after the end of his contract with the Filipino side. He had expressed his love for the Asian side of basketball and has now fulfilled this with another move back to Asia.

Deguara, the Excellence’s new number 75, has featured in games already, particularly the Emperor’s Cup first and second round.

In his first comments to the club, he referred to the two weeks of quarantine in which he strived to stay in shape and kickstart his work to be ready for his team.

“Now, with my power under the rim and my skills I can bring more to this team,” Deguara said.
