Laganà and Abela triumph in the Mediterranean Championship qualifiers

Kayden Laganà and Sue Abela won the right to represent the Malta Tenpin Bowling Association at the upcoming Mediterranean Championships, in Paris, France, after topping their respective categories in the qualifying tournament held this week.

Laganà and Abela will be joined by Matthew Magro and Cynthia Frendo Duca, who placed second in their respective class.

The men’s competition ended up being a three-way fight between 3 young players 13-year-old Laganà, Magro, 19, and 16-year-old Nicholas Muscat.

Magro shot out of the blocks on day one with a remarkable 220 average including a great 268 game and continued to stay in the lead after the second set of eight games on Day 2.

Laganà went from third to second on Day Two, with some strong games, while Muscat fell to sixth on Day 2 after his second-place finish on Day One.

The third and final day saw the three youngsters at their best. However, young Laganà continued his supreme start to 2021 with a blistering set of eight games, including his personal best of 277, as well as a great 253 to overtake Magro, the current Under 23 champion, by just eight pins.

Muscat also had two very strong games of 256 and 257 in this set to finish in third place.

The ladies edition was led from the start by national champion, Sue Abela, who has taken part in all 22 editions of the MBC.

Abela finished a comfortable 366 pins ahead of second-placed Cynthia Frendo Duca.

Frendo Duca had ended Day 2 in third place, just behind Under 23 champion Sara Xuereb.

However, she fought off Xuereb’s and Melissa Swift’s challenge with a 211 final game that saw her finish 39 pins ahead of Swift who had to settle in third place.

The final result means that Abela will be flanked by three debutants in the Mediterranean Championships, namely Frendo Duca and teenagers Laganà and Magro, who are the two youngest representatives to represent the MTBA in these championships.

This qualifying tournament also served as a final selection for the Malta team for the European Team Championships.

The boys team will be made up of Laganà, Muscat, Dwayne Zahra and Chris Fenech, while the female selection will be formed by Ruslana Grima and Kathryn Fenech.
