San Ġiljan ASC are set to be without three players for their opening Enemed Cup encounter against Valletta Izibet on Saturday after they tested positive for COVID-19, the Times of Malta can confirm.
The 2021 waterpolo season will get under way this week with the start of the pre-season competition, the Enemed Cup, which this year is being played on a knock-out format.
National League champions San Ġiljan saw their build up for this year’s competition hampered when three players have returned a positive test and have now been sent into a mandatory 15-day quarantine.
“Following COVID-19 positive test results for three of the club’s players, the club is liaising with the Aquatic Sports Association, in full respect of the protocols in place by Health Authorities, so as to ensure full safety and well-being of its squad. Official medical results are still in process,” the club said in a statement.
“The sporting activity for the senior squad will resume once all the mentioned health arrangements will be ensured.”
Regulations for this year’s pre-season competitions state that if a team cannot fulfil its match commitments due to COVID-19 they will be forced to withdraw from the competition.
However, San Ġiljan have already informed the ASA that they will be replacing the infected players with three young players and will honour this weekend’s fixtures, provided no more positive case emerge.
