Ħamrun Spartans midfielder Predrag Djordjevic has described his team’s top-of-the-table clash against Gżira United as their biggest game of the season as the Reds will be looking to preserve their leadership in the Premier League.
At present, the Spartans enjoy a two-point lead over nearest rivals Hibernians with Gżira United in third place a further two points back.
“We are aware that we are going to face a very strong side in Gżira United,” the Serbian midfielder told the Times of Malta.
“Personally I think that this our biggest game of the season and we must be ready for it. We too are showing that we are a strong team that plays well and are tactically very well prepared and our goal is to go out and win the match.”
The former Nadur Youngsters midfielder said that the Spartans biggest quality this season has been the unity and camarderie that exists between the players.
“For me, our biggest strength is that we always stick together and we are one big family both on the pitch as well as in training,” Djordjevic said.
“Our team is made up of some great characters and for me that is the biggest quality a team can have.”
On his part, Ħamrun Spartans coach Mark Buttigieg said that he was approaching the match against Gżira United as any other match even though he admitted that direct matches against title rivals were important in their quest to win the title.
“We are approaching this match as any other game even though clashes against your nearest rivals hold even more importance,” the Gozitan coach said.
“The team has always performed well in top matches and we are confident to have a good performance and we look forward to do the job.”
Buttigieg said that the team has matured a lot since the start of the season and that should serve in good stead against Gżira.
“Since the start of the season, the team has gone a long way as they matured a lot and have showed great character and that is very important particularly in tough moments in key matches,” he said.
“There were many instances recently when the team found themselves behind in key matches, such as Floriana and Birkirkara, where the players stuck together and showed great character to turn the match around. So hopefully we can show that spirit come the match against Gżira.”
