Ħamrun-Hibs set to go ahead as no new positive COVID-19 cases in Spartans squad

Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash between Ħamrun Spartans and Hibernians is set to be held as scheduled after no new positive COVID-19 tests emerged from the Spartans squad following the latest round of swab testing held on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Ħamrun Spartans confirmed that two members of the first-team squad and a member of their youth selection tested positive for COVID-19, putting in serious threat their FA Trophy match against Xagħra United and the much-awaited Premier League clash against title rivals Hibernians on Saturday.

The Spartans regularly played their FA Trophy match against Xagħra United where despite fielding a second-string side they powered their way to a resounding 6-0 win at the Gozo Stadium with Franklin Sasere, Blas Cittadini and Ige Adeshina helping themselves to a brace.

On Thursday, the Spartans were scheduled to undergo another round of swab tests and should another player had tested positive, it was understood that Saturday’s clash against Hibs at the National Stadium would be postponed and put the whole squad in a mandatory 15-day quarantine.

However, results of Thursday’s testing showed that no other player had contracted the virus, meaning that the Premier League clash against Hibs is expected to be played as scheduled.
