Martina Borg and her Sassari Torres team made an important step towards Serie B promotion after claiming the spoils with a 2-1 win against challengers Filecchio Women on away soil.
Borg, who is a Malta women’s national team player, was a starter for Sassari and had a full shift as a midfielder in what has been a nerve-wrecking battle between the two sides.
Giuseppa Bassano and Adriana Gomes’ goals for Sassari sandwiched Filecchio’s momentarily 1-1 scored early in the second half, to hand the Sardegna-based side three vital points.
With four games left, Sassari remain first on 46 points whereas Filecchio stay on 40. Bologna and Arezzo are Sassari’s other rivals in the race for first place which guarantees promotion to Serie B.
