Martina Borg’s Sassari Torres clinch Serie B promotion

The 2020/2021 season for the foreign-based Malta women’s international players has ended on a high as Martina Borg and her Sassari Torres have won Serie B promotion after beating Ducato Spoleto 10-0 in their final Serie C game of the season.

Borg, formerly of Pembroke Athleta and Hibernians, was given the nod to start in the midfield as she was making her 20th appearance for the Sardegna-based side, this season. She managed to score five goals in the process.

This was Borg’s second straight year at Sassari after her Serie C experience with Apulia Trani and Serie B spell at Fortitudo Mozzecane before joining one of Italy’s most decorated teams in the women’s game, two seasons ago.

In fact, Sassari boast seven Serie A titles – the last one won in 2012/2013, alongside eight Coppa Italia triumphs. In addition, they represented Italy seven times in the Women’s Champions League as well.

Borg’s successful season adds to the solid showings put on by her fellow Maltese players this season.

In Italy, Haley Bugeja finished as Sassuolo’s top scorer and was named Serie A Best Young Player of the Year on her debut season.

Emma Lipman and Rachel Cuschieri contributed to Lazio’s promotion to the Serie A after eight years.

At youth level, Nicole Sciberras was part of Juventus U-19’s team that placed second in the Italian youth league which involved also Kailey Willis. In the early stages of this season, Sciberras was also called up by the senior team for an international tournament.

Willis scored in the Scudetto play-offs for Hellas Verona. The former Birkirkara player made her Serie A and Coppa Italia debut this season as well.

In England, Maria Farrugia scored a belter for Sunderland Ladies at their main ground – Stadium of Light in a 3-2 win over Middlesbrough.

In Belgium, Ylenia Carabott earned RCSC Charleroi their first ever win in the Belgium top-flight with a goal in their 2-1 victory over Zulte Waregem.
