Stripes set to bring in forward Ruth Steer Chetham
Birkirkara women’s team have an agreement in place with Swieqi United to sign Malta women’s international defender Charlene Zammit.
Although Zammit is not yet registered officially as a Birkirkara player, the Malta international is part of the Stripes’ training camp in Turin which will see the Maltese side involved in pre-season tune-up against Juventus Women, on Sunday.
Zammit is set to be joined by forward Ruth Steer Chetham who is also part of Birkirkara’s training camp in Italy and will join from Swieqi.
Defender Zammit has been on the books of Swieqi for the past two seasons with whom she played 25 games in the domestic league. Previously, she won all local competitions as a Hibernians player. She has also played 76 games at international level.
Zammit was part of the Hibernians squad that had managed to score a historic point in the Women’s Champions League, when they drew 3-3 with Klaksvik of Faroe Islands in the 2015/2016 edition.
Steer Chetham, on her part, scored eight goals in the 21 games she played for Swieqi in the last two seasons. Like Zammit, she also won all domestic competitions with Hibernians and has already played with Birkirkara.
In fact, the forward is the first ever player to score for a Maltese club in this European competition after finding the net for the Stripes in the 2007/2008 edition, in a game against Novo Mesto of Slovenia.
Birkirkara will be staying in Turin from Saturday till Tuesday, where they will gear up their preparations for their upcoming UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.
