Gżira United suffered a huge blow with the news that wingback Ricardo Correa is set to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.
The Uruguayan midfielder divulged the news with a post on his facebook page but vowed that he would come back stronger.
“Anterior cruciate ligament rupture, The last thing an athlete wants to hear! I’ll be back soon and stronger than ever. Thanks for the messages and support,” Correa wrote.
Correa suffered the injury during Sunday’s match against Sta Lucia FC and had to be substituted after 65 minutes of play.
The loss of Correa is a huge blow for Gżira United coach Darren Abdilla who had made the 27-year-old a regular starter in his team since his move to the Maroons in the summer of 2020 from Balzan FC.
In fact last season, Correa made 22 appearances for Gżira United, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists.
It is understood that Gżira United are looking at the possibility of delving into the market to bring in cover for Correa’s absence.
Although the club is looking at various foreign players it is understood that a transfer could materialise if the club manages to offload some players.
One player who has been rumoured that could be on his way out of Gżira United is wing back Dexter Xuereb who is currently in talks with Premier League sides Sta Lucia FC and Sirens FC.
However, the player has yet to make a decision on where he will continue his career.
