Gżira United confirm signing of Brazilian forward Yuri Messias

Gżira United have confirmed the signing of Brazilian forward Yuri Messiah.

As reported by the Times of Malta on Thursday, Messiah is expected to fill the void left by Uruguayan winger Ricardo Correa who has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

The 29-year-old forward is a familiar name in Maltese football having had several spells with clubs here over the years.

In fact, he was originally brought to Malta by Mosta in 2013 and then joined Msida St Joseph, the following season.

In 2016 he joined Naxxar Lions where he played for two seasons before heading to Gozitan football where he played for Nadur Youngsters.

Two years later he moved to the Middle East where he played for Saudi Arabian club Al-Jabalain.

In the summer of 2019 he returned to Malta to join Valletta FC but he struggled to leave his mark with the Citizens and in February 2020 he returned to Brazil to join Frederiquense.

Last season, he was back in Maltese football when he played for Gudja United and enjoyed a sparkling first part of the season when he scored 13 goals in 14 appearances.

But during the January transfer window he decided to return to the Middle East and join Bahrain side East Riffa.

Now, Messias has the chance to write a new chapter in Maltese football with Gżira United who are looking to make up for a disappointing start to the season that has seen them pick up just one point from their opening two matches.
