Mosta FC claimed bragging rights over their neighbouring rivals Naxxar Lions in the Northern Cup clash that was played at the Charles Abela Stadium on Friday.
The Northern Cup was created by Mosta and Naxxar Lions in a bid to revive the rivalry between the clubs.
Friday’s match turned out to be a hard-fought affair that ended in 2-2 draw.
A penalty shoot-out was needed and it was Mosta who took the spoils when they prevailed 9-8.
Mosta’s scorers on Friday are Johann Bezzina, who has just rejoined the Blues on loan from Birkirkara, and Salim Cisse.
The Guinea forward is currently on trial with the Blues with a view of earning himself a contract and surely he gave his hopes of a transfer no harm with his goal.
On the other hand, Naxxar Lions’ scorers on the day were new signings Samuel Saldanha, who last season was on the books of Kerċem Ajax, and Gilberto Carrara.
For Mosta, Roderick Briffa, who has just completed his transfer with the Blues on a two-year deal from Birkirkara, made his first appearance in the club.
However, there was no sign of Isaac Ntow as the Ghana defender’s transfer to Mosta collapsed on the 11th hour.
In fact, sources close to Mosta FC told the Times of Malta that a total agreement had been reached between the two parties but the player increased his demands just before signing and the transfer broke down.
