Birkirkara women launch title quest with San Ġwann win

Birkirkara women’s team have launched their title quest for a 10th domestic title with a comfortable victory over newcomers San Ġwann.

The Stripes scored nine goals in their opening game with three players grabbing a brace each in Alishia Sultana, Veronique Mifsud and Tracy Teuma.

The other goals were scored by Raina Giusti and new signings Ruth Steer-Chetham and Charlene Zammit.

For this game, Birkirkara coach Melania Bajada deployed veteran goalkeeper Tonina Dimech who was replacing the injured Janice Xuereb.

San Ġwann, on their part, were playing their first ever game in the women’s senior league and their starting formation included a number of players who last season were on the books of Mosta.

Mġarr United also recorded a winning start to this campaign after beating Kirkop United 4-0.

Francesca Chircop, who was called up with the Malta women’s national team for the Bosnia-Herzegovina qualifier this month, resumed where she had left off last season as she scored a hat-trick for the Greens.

Defender Rodiana Borg was Mġarr’s other scorer in this game who were playing their first game under the guidance of newly-appointed coach Michael Mangion.

On the other hand, Kirkop were playing with a number of new signings including Aleksandra Georgieva, Yolande Attard, Emma Zammit and Eliza Csik.

In the other league game, Raiders Lija opened their commitments with a 5-0 victory against Mtarfa.

Led by coach Denis Guerra, Raiders scored through five different scorers in Leah Ayres, who joined the club this season, Miriana Conti, Maya Lucia, Michela Bonello Ghio and Rebecca Vella.

Mtarfa, who are making their second straight appearance in the women’s senior league, were playing under new coach Simon Spiteri who took over from Shawn Meilak.
