Dylan Cachia and Sasha Gatt were in top form at the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships after setting new national records in Kazan, Russia.
Cachia and Gatt are part of a squad of three swimmers that also includes Thomas Wareing who earned their berth at the European Championships after topping the selection criteria set up by the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta.
The Maltese contingent was off to an impressive start as Cachia and Gatt both set new national benchmarks on the opening day of competition.
Dylan Cachia swam the 400m Free in a Short Course national record of 03:57.26.
His time was almost six seconds faster than the previous best set by Thomas J. Woods in Istanbul in 2021 when he had completed the distance in 4:03.30.
Cachia is also expected to compete in the 400m and 800m freestyle events in the coming days.
On her part, Sasha Gatt swam the 800m free in a new national best time of 08:52.04.
Gatt’s performance completely destroyed her previous national best by 12 seconds when she had clocked 9:04.88.
Gatt has three other competitions scheduled in Russia this week, namely the 200m free, 400m free, and the 1,500m free.
Thomas Wareing will be in action in three Individual Medley events namely the 100m, 200m, and 400m races.
