Rabat Ajax have hit out at the ‘inhuman’ fixtures list they were given by the Malta FA after the Challenge League side have just returned to training after coming out of COVID-19 quarantine.
The Ajax were back in league action on Tuesday when they suffered a 7-2 thrashing by San Ġwann in their first match since coming back from COVID-19 quarantine and incredibly the Magpies must play a second match on Friday – a decision that was met by anger by Rabat Ajax and their players.
Rabat forward Adam Smeir did not mince his words when taking social media, describing the MFA actions as inhuman.
“Hope no club and players in Malta are treated by the MFA the way Rabat Ajax and our ourselves were treated these last couple of days,” Smeir said.
“It’s unacceptable. You don’t acre for the wellbeing of players and you surely don’t care for the sacrifices and work club officials make to keep a club floating.
“I would like to say a big thank you to our committee for the great job that is doing. We really appreciate your work. Unfortunately, the MFA doesn’t care less.
“How can a team play after ten days without proper training and players still in quarantine after unforeseen circumstances and you put yesterday’s fixture just three days before another scheduled fixtures.
“We played yesterday after we had to do quarantine without training and we have to play again this Friday with just two sessions to prepare.
“We are human beings before footballers.
“The most important thing is that we complete fixtures, we don’t care.”
On their part, Rabat Ajax backed Smeir’s statement and said: “In a few words, our player Adam Smeir managed to summarise well his thoughts, the players and officials’ thoughts and those of the committee members,” the club said in a statement.
“Besides, in the space of 22 days, our players will have to play six matches, practically a match every three days until December 22.
“The Rabat Ajax committee is backing all the players at the club. We know that they don the club’s colours with a great heart. Whatever happens, we will always be behind you.”
