The Malta national team will discover its opponents in the 2022 UEFA Nations League on Thursday evening (start: 6pm) when the draw of the competition will be held in Nyon, Switzerland.
Playing in League D, the Malta national team are one of five national teams that have been confirmed to compete in this section along with Liechtenstein, Latvia, San Marino and Andorra.
The two other teams that will play in League D will come out after next March’s play-off when Kazakhstan take on Moldova and Cyprus play Estonia.
The losers of these ties, which will be played in March 2022, will be relegated in League D.
Malta have been put in Pot 1 along with Kazakhstan/Moldova, Cyprus/Estonia and Liechtenstein.
Pot 2 is formed by Latvia, San Marino and Andorra.
The seven participating teams will be split into two groups, with one made up of four teams and the other will be made up of three teams.
Malta will be hopeful of a favourable draw as they will be looking to go a step further than the last edition when on that occasion Devis Mangia’s team just missed out on promotion at the expense of Faroe Islands following a 1-1 draw between the two nations at the National Stadium that sealed the Nordic’s place in League C.
Contrary to previous years, the UEFA Nations League matches will be played in a congested three-month period between June 2 and September 27.
