Wins for Birkirkara, Mġarr to end year as women’s league joint-leaders

Birkirkara and Mġarr United wrapped up their 2021 commitments with two victories that keep them at the top of the women’s league as the championship will now pause for the next couple of weeks before returning in the first week of January.

The Stripes defeated San Ġwann 4-0 whereas Mġarr United beat Kirkop United 3-0. Both teams lead the standings with 19 points after seven games, with Birkirkara boasting the best attacking record with 33 goals.

On the other hand, Mġarr are still the only club that has kept a clean sheet in every single game in the league so far.

Veronique Mifsud and Valentina Rapa scored the other goals for the Stripes – both scoring their third goal of the season.

Mġarr, on their part, opened a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to a rare double by defender Leanne Cefai on the 11th and the 33rd minute. After the change of ends, forward Francesca Chircop added the third for the Greens to cement herself at the top of the league scoring charts with eight goals.

In the other game of the week, Raiders Lija have put 11 past Mtarfa to lift themselves into third place with 13 points, six behind the two league leaders.

After the change of ends, Raiders scored eight goals through Maya Lucia, Sarah Vella Barbieri, Miriana Conti, Anna Aloisio, Sarah Caruana and a Leah Alice Ayres hat-trick, as she is now the second league top scorer with seven goals together with Birkirkara’s Sultana.

During this game, Mtarfa coach Simon Spiteri handed a debut to U-16’s player Estelle Borg.
