Maria Farrugia’s Sunderland Ladies defeated by London City in the Championship

Maria Farrugia’s Sunderland Ladies failed to start the new year on a high after losing 3-1 to FA Women’s Championship rivals London City Lionesses, on Sunday afternoon.

London City Lionesses are chasing league leaders Liverpool Women for the solitary spot that guarantees promotion to the FA Women’s Super League.

On the other hand, Sunderland are lying in the bottom half of the table as they look set to salvage their second-tier status after bottom side Coventry United were docked 10 points and they are now on -4, while Farrugia’s team are on 12.

The Malta women’s international started from the first minute and remained on the pitch for 65 minutes before being subbed off.

Next weekend, Sunderland travel to Lewes.
