Maltese goalkeeper Philip Schranz completes move to Swiss football

Maltese goalkeeper Philip Schranz is set to continue his career in Switzerland after he signed a short-term contract with FC Freienbach, the Swiss club announced on Monday.

Schranz, 25, started the 2021/2022 season at German side FV Wannsee, in the regional leagues where he got the opportunity to show his qualities between the sticks which eventually earned him this move to Switzerland.

FC Freienbach compete in Switzerland’s fourth-tier and they have scored 29 points after 14 games, sitting in third position as they are chasing one of the top two places which would guarantee them a promotion play-off.

Switzerland’s third-tier is composed of three groups with FC Freienbach playing in Group 3. They resume their commitments on March 5 with an away game at Wettsil-Bonstetten.

Schranz came through the Melita academy and had spells with Birkirkara, St Andrews, Tarxien Rainbows, Senglea Athletic and Pembroke Athleta among others. He has also represented the Malta national team at youth level, including in the U-21’s category.
