Maria Farrugia and her Sunderland Ladies had their FA Cup run halted by Birmingham City after a narrow 2-1 defeat in extra-time.
Farrugia was in the starting formation for Sunderland, who ply their trade in the second-tier called the FA Women’s Championship.
Birmingham, who were hosting this tie, are currently playing in the FA Women’s Super League which is the top-flight in the English women’s game.
Sunderland forced an additional 30 minutes after cancelling Birmingham’s lead in the closing stages of regular time. Nonetheless, Birmingham managed to find a winner and eventually advance into the next round.
