Mtarfa captain Lorna Cassar delighted after first-ever win in women’s league

Over a week ago, a 37th-minute goal might not have sent shockwaves in the MFA Women’s League but for one team it meant the world. For Mtarfa, this goal cancelled an infamous run of 24 winless games which stretches back to their inception in the women’s game at senior level.

Courtesy of this goal, Mtarfa went on to beat San Ġwann and lift themselves from the bottom of the standings for the first time in two years. Their points tally might just show four points, but these four points are starting to shed light on the commitment that the players and staff put on a daily basis at Mtarfa.

In the process of this victory, Mtarfa scored their first-ever goal this season and managed to obtain their second clean sheet of this campaign. Both shutouts came against San Ġwann, who are now anchored in last place with just one point. In fact, in the corresponding fixture both sides had fired blanks in a goalless stalemate.

“Following this win, we were all emotional but at the same time pleased that our sacrifices had paid dividends at last,” Mtarfa captain Lorna Cassar told the Times of Malta.

“A lot of players had been waiting for this moment for over two years and thanks to the coaching staff and all the group, we have finally managed to score three crucial points.”

Mtarfa’s Cassar explained that although the results were never in their favour, their chemistry helped them forge a bond between them.

“We have created a family atmosphere here,” she pointed out.

“Obviously, there is always room for improvement and given that our average age is quite young, I believe there is a lot of potential in our squad. The most important thing is that we keep believing and never give up.”

After securing their first win of the season, Cassar has not set limits for Mtarfa as she believes her side can reach more objectives during this 2021/2022 campaign.

“We have a number of goals to reach throughout this campaign,” Cassar explained.

“Winning our first ever game was one of our primary objectives, obviously. As a team, we set up our objectives game after game as we seek more progress in our football. This allows to work on our positive and negative actions, and make a self-assessment of our performances.

Another target that the club has set is to provide players from our women’s teams to the national team selections.”

Such objectives highlight Mtarfa’s ambitions to be more competitive at senior level, but also the willingness to work with the young girls which is a crucial thing for the movement of the Maltese women’s game.
