The Malta’s women’s rugby 7s national team will be taking part in the Sicilian section of the Coppa Italia for the remainder of the 2021-22 season, the Malta Rugby Football Union announced.
Between this month and the middle of June, the national team will take part in six rounds of the competition together with four other Sicilian rugby teams.
The first of these rounds will take place on Sunday, with the Maltese national team travelling to Ragusa for the competition.
The Maltese national team will be participating in this competition alongside Sicilian sides ASD Cus Catania Rugby, ASD Ragusa Rugby Union, Iron Ladies Rugby Palermo ASD, and Rugby I Briganti ASD Onlus.
One of the six rounds where the national team is set to take part will be hosted in Malta, with the MRFU welcoming all four Sicilian teams to the Marsa Sports Complex for the Coppa Italia matchday on May 21.
The national team’s participation in the competition is another key part of the union’s preparation for the upcoming Games of the Small States of Europe, which will take place in Malta next year and which will include both men’s and women’s rugby 7s.
The matches will provide important opportunities for national team players to gain more match experience together against stiff opposition, and for more and more players to be added to the national pool of players.
In a statement, the Malta Rugby Football Union thanked National women’s coach Carmelo Longo, National 7s Skills Coach, James Morris, the Maltese Olympic Committee, and SportMalta for making this opportunity possible.
