Local basketball club Depiro BC’s corporate social responsibility event called ‘Let’s Get Active’ was hailed a ‘huge success’ after hosting no less than 300 people at Mtarfa on Saturday for a day of physical activity and exposure to local entities.

The event, held in collaboration with the Mtarfa Local Council and the Mtarfa Community Policing team, Dar Kenn Ghal Sahhtek, Mtarfa Scouts Group, and Baden Powell Scouts Group Mtarfa aimed to promote the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

In a statement following the event, Ruben Baldacchino, CEO of Depiro BC  said he looked forward to creating more events of the like after the one on Saturday was a successful effort.

“The activity turned out a huge success,” Baldacchino said, “we had over 300 people attending the activity which promoted a healthy lifestyle for all the community.

“The activity was focused on promoting the sport for all and where everyone can enjoy doing sports activities which are beneficial for their health, social and mental well-being.

“We are looking forward to organizing more of these activities together with private, government, and non-governmental organizations that work in the community to have a healthier and happier population. COVID-19 hit us badly, and it is our duty to create these activities for the wellbeing of all.”

The event consisted of a walk around Mtarfa led by the community policing team and mounted police. Following this, local organisations exhibited their work at the Mtarfa square while children had the opportunity to try the challenging activity of walking on a monkey bridge, abseiling, outdoor cooking, and pyrography by both scout groups.

Other stands which were set up in the activity included one to promote literacy by Mtarfa Library, and another with local honey with explanations of its health benefits. Dar Kenn Ghal Sahhtek produced a stand with useful information about their services together with other stands.

The activities coincided with the last day of the Depiro SibtSport program where the junior programs had the opportunity to take part in sports activities in the Depiro Basketball facilities. The early years’ group had the opportunity to meet the mounted police together with the community police whilst doing physical activities in the Mtarfa woodland. A basketball event was also organised by the club nursery involving the parents.

“This activity has shown that government and non-governmental organizations can work together for the benefit of the community. Depiro Basketball is committed to keep strengthening this collaboration between organizations,” the statement read.
