Paul Zammit close to take over as new Sliema Wanderers coach

Sliema Wanderers are closing in on appointing Paul Zammit as their new first-team coach, the Times of Malta can confirm.

The Wanderers have been in search of a new first-team coach since the end of the season, which saw them lose their top-flight status for the first time after several years.

Last season, Sliema Wanderers started the campaign with Andrea Pisanu but they struggled for results and the Italian was dismissed from the job at the turn of the year.

The club handed the team to his assistant Noel Turner, with Oliver Spiteri appointed as the club’s technical director.

However, despite the changes and the arrival of several reinforcements in the January transfer window the team could not avoid relegation.

The Blues are now looking to start afresh and have identified Zammit as the ideal candidate that can lead them back into the Maltese top-flight.

On Monday, club president Keith Perry held a long meeting with Zammit and an agreement has almost been reached between the two parties that would see the former Birkirkara coach take over the team.

It is understood that Zammit will be spearheading a new technical project at the club that would put the team on a much stronger foundation for the future, giving a lot of importance to nurturing young talent.

Another meeting is scheduled for later on this week where it is expected that all formalities will be completed and see Zammit signing a contract with the Wanderers.

For Zammit, the Sliema Wanderers experience will mark a return to competitive football just a couple of months after parting ways with Balzan FC towards the end of last season.
