French win in Mediterranean Leg

Vencedor and Catherine’s Chevy won two of Sunday’s major events at the Marsa Racetrack. These were races open for class Premier trotters and which formed part of the 30th meeting of the season consisting of nine races all for trotters. Sunday’s card also included the first leg from the Mediterranean and Black Sea championship with Malta being represented by Paul Galea. This international race was won by the French representative Martin Cormy who was driving Coyote Du Relais.

Fourteen trotters lined up for the first class Premier race. Driven by Rodney Gatt, Vencedor was unchallenged during the distance and managed to gain its first win of the season after passing the finishing post by half-length from Cristal Pierji (George Attard) and Cutty Sark (Eman Attard). Onceforall Face (Brian Hili) ended in fourth place. The winner clocked an average time of 1.16.1” per kilometer. 

Coumba Kouky (George Attard) which was the early leader of the second race from the same category, was overtaken midway through the final straight by Catherine’s Chevy (Jesmar Gafa’). Gafa’s trotter registered its first win in Malta in an average time of 1.14.4” per kilometer with French newcomer Clovis Montaval (Marvic Bugeja) and Dzarof De Guez (Cherise Farrugia) following behind in that order.

Coyote du Relais (Martin Cormy – France) led all the way during the 2,140m distance of the first leg from the Mediterranean and Black Sea Championship. This French trotter sealed its first win of the year after sustaining in the final straight the challenge of Defi Du Theys (Clint Vassallo) and Caline De Mai Capo (Rodney Gatt). Foppa Sisu, under the guidance of Romanian Gheorghe Iulian Tanase ended in fourth place.

At the end of this international race, Edwin Borg, Vice Chairman of the Malta Racing Club and EquestriMalta, presented the winning trophy to the French driver and to Lorraine Cunningham, the owner of Coyote Du Relais. It should be noted that this was the second year in a row that Coyote Du Relais managed to triumph in this international competition.

Another meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held on Tuesday, a public holiday. The first race should start at 18.00.

Race 7. Class Silver. Dist – 2140m. 1. Elegant Frost (Shawn Axisa) – 1.15.8”

Race 8. Class Premier. Dist – 2140m. 1. Catherine’s Chevy (Jesmar Gafa’) – 1.14.4”
