Maltese football fans experienced a memorable night of European football on Thursday as Hibernians, Gżira United and Ħamrun Spartans booked their place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League.
Hibernians produced a gallant display to claim a 1-1 draw against Levadia Tallinn to secure a 4-3 aggregate win. The Paolites will be bidding for an unprecedented berth in the Play Off round when they face Latvian side RFS.
Gżira United produced arguably the performance of the night when they came from behind three times and secure a 3-3 draw against Serbian side Radnicki Nis and force a penalty shoot-out.
Here, Gżira goalkeeper Darijan Zarkov came to the fore as the Maroons completed the upset with a 3-1 win on penalties.
Gżira United will now face Austrian giants Wolfsberger in the third qualifying round.
Ħamrun Spartans made it three wins in a row when they edged past Vele Mostar 1-0 with Jonny’s first-half goal proving to be decisive.
The result earned the Spartans a 2-0 aggregate win and the Reds will now face Bulgarian giants Levski Sofia.
This is the first time that Malta has three teams in the third qualifying round of a UEFA club competition in what has been so far a fairytale participation in Europe this summer.
