While Ħamrun Spartans wrote a historic page for the club and Maltese football as they reached the play-off round of the UEFA Europa Conference League, a former Ħamrun player was thriving in the same competition.
Franklin Sasere, who parted ways with the Spartans during this summer, helped Vaduz make history for Liechtenstein football as they upset Turkey’s Konyaspor to advance into the play-off round.
Vaduz, who have never made it so far in a UEFA club competition, will now face Rapid Vienna of Austria.
Against Konyaspor, Vaduz managed to qualify with an impressive 5-3 aggregate after a 1-1 draw in the home leg and a stunning 4-2 victory in Turkey.
In the first leg, Sasere had put Vaduz ahead for his second goal in four Conference League matches. In fact, Sasere had scored the decisive goal in the previous round against Slovenia’s Koper which handed the Liechtenstein side the qualification.
Vaduz and Ħamrun Spartans, together with Zrinjski (Bosnia-Herzegovina). Ballkani (Kosovo) and Linfield (Northern Ireland) are now one round away from becoming the first representative from their country to qualify for a European group stage.
