Malta national team assistant coach Giacomazzi leaves post

Guillermo Giacomazzi is no longer assistant coach of the Malta men’s national team, the Malta Football Association (MFA) announced on Monday.

“The Malta FA communications that is has amicably agreed with Guillermo Giacomazzi on the rescission of his contract as Assistant Coach of the National A Team,” the MFA said in a statement.

“The Malta FA and Giacomazzi had been in discussions for the last months in view of the latter seeking pastures new at club level.

“The Malta FA would like to thank Guillermo for his invaluable contribution within the National Team setup and to wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” the official communication ended.

Giacomazzi joined Malta’s setup in February 2020 when he was announced as one of the two assistant coaches within the senior team.

This news comes days after National Teams’ Head Coach Devis Mangia was suspended after he was accused of alleged improper conduct against two national team players.

The case has been referred to the MFA’s Safeguarding Officer to investigate the allegations made, gather information and compile a report about the case which will be submitted to the Safeguarding Board in according with a time table set by the Executive Board.

The MFA is expected to take a final decision on Mangia’s future in next week’s Executive Committee before the team launches its preparations for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers with a friendly match against Ireland in November.

Mangia’s other assistant coach, Davide Mazzotta, took charge of the national team in their latest friendly against Israel which Malta won 2-1. A decision about Mazzotta and the rest of the technical staff is also expected to be taken in next week’s meeting.
