Maltese football fans are set for a treat next month after it was confirmed that Italian giants Inter and Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg will be making the trip to our islands for a short training camp.

The Times of Malta had reported this month that Serie A giants Inter were planning to hold a short camp in Malta during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, during which they were due to play two friendly matches against a Maltese side and a foreign team.

Sources have confirmed to the Times of Malta in the past few days that Inter had all but finalised plans to hold a short training camp in Malta between December 4 and 9.

Now, the Times of Malta is now in a position to confirm the identity of the foreign team that will be joining Inter early next month, as Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg, on Friday, announced plans to arrive in Malta on December 4 for a five-day camp during which they will play a friendly against Inter on December 7.

“Our team will have a week off training – excluding internationals – when our intensive autumn finishes with our Bundesliga match vs Austria Klagenfurt on Sunday,” the Austrian champions said in a statement.

“Training will then be held until 8 December, 2022, with a short training camp in Malta (4 to 8 December) planned. There will be a friendly against top Italian club Inter Milan (December 7).”

Salzburg’s training stint in Malta is the first of two camps held outside Austria, as the club is planning to travel to the Spanish city of Marbella between January 14 and 21.

The news that two high-profile sides like Inter and Salzburg will be coming to Malta next month will surely excite Maltese football fans, despite the fact that both sides will have some star players missing as they will be playing at the 2022 World Cup.

In fact, Inter are still set to come to Malta with some popular players such as goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, Hakan Calhanoglu, Nicolo Barella, Milan Skriniar and Edin Dzeko.

On the other hand, Salzburg are set to make the trip to Malta with a group of players who are tipped to be the stars of international football in the future.

These include Slovenian forward Benjamin Sesko, who last summer was courted by English Premier League giants, Liverpool and Manchester United, and Chukwubuike Adamu, scorer of seven goals in the last 12 matches, including against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League.

Added to that Salzburg are led by coach Matthias Jaissle, one of the brightest prospects in football management.

Salzburg are unlikely to be the only Austrian team to be travelling to Malta in the coming months.

In fact, the Times of Malta has information that WSG Tirol will be taking part in the annual Tipsport Cup hosted by VisitMalta, which will be played in January.
