Ħamrun Spartans take time off to test basketball skills – for a good cause

The national team break provided league leaders Ħamrun Spartans with yet another opportunity to share their passion for sport with less fortunate members of society, but in doing so experience team-building and bonding which is fundamental for any organisation let alone team sport.

While traditionally, they shared their passion for football with different groups, demonstrating skills and techniques, this time round it was their turn to learn the ropes of another sport.

The Ħamrun squad, featuring all of its members who have not joined up the national team, together with technical staff, joined forces at the Kulleġġ San Ġorg Preca in their hometown where a number of young people from the St Patrick’s School and Residential care in Sliema took them on at a quick-paced 3×3 game of basketball.

The challenge got harder for players like Emerson Marcelina, Dodo and Elvis Mashike and colleagues, as Malta’s wheelchair basketball talents challenged them in this fascinating two-wheeled game much to the enjoyment of all present.

Naturally, although the basketball court was the centre of attention for the day, the Spartans just must get some football in their day and delighted the youngsters present, asking them to join them on the outside pitch at the Liċeo for a kickabout.

It was definitely an experience to remember for these sport enthusiasts to share a pitch with Malta’s football league leaders.

At the end of the event, organised by Ħamrun Ħanin with the support of the Malta Wheelchair Basketball Association, Spartans coach Branko Nisevic said: “It is always our pride and joy to bring a smile on the face of those who might not always have reason to cheer – it was also a learning experience for our boys.

“Although we have a number of truly touching human stories within our ranks, men who experienced a rough childhood, it is essential to make sure that they remember how lucky they are to earn their living through an activity which is their passion. This is why we believe Hamrun is more than just a football club.”

Noel Aquilina, club president of the Malta Wheelchair Basketball Assocation added: “Yesterday, as an Association, we were involved in a teambuilding programme with Ħamrun Spartans FC and a number of young people from St Patrick’s.

“Such collaboration helps to raise awareness on inclusion and a further recognition to how sport can help bring down barriers and help us understand that despite our differences, we are all the same”.
