For the second consecutive week, Sara Saliba proved to be Birkirkara’s hero when she netted the all-important goal in their crunch encounter against Mġarr United.
In the 2022 finale of the Assikura Women’s League, the youngster scored an early goal to hand the Stripes three valuable points and the opportunity to open a two-point lead at the top of the championship.
Jose Borg’s side are now at the back of two narrow wins against title challengers Swieqi United and Mġarr as they head into next Wednesday’s Super Cup against the Owls in high spirits.
Birkirkara’s win over the Greens means that they are now 76 games without a single defeat in the women’s league.
The Stripes have a game in hand as they are yet to resume their encounter against San Ġwann, which was abandoned when Birkirkara were already four goals to the good.
Hibernians scored three without reply against San Ġwann to make it two wins in two games in the second round.
The Paolites opened the score in the first half through forward Rodianne Zerafa who has now five goals for the club.
Keith Gouder’s side made sure of the win with two late goals through Alexis Espitia – now league’s top scorer with 8 goals – and youth player Shakira Bugeja.
Elsewhere, Leanne Micallef converted a first-half penalty kick to give Raiders Lija a narrow victory over Mtarfa to move to 13 points.
