Mosta were the more clinical side on Sunday as they beat Marsaxlokk 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium.

While it was Marsaxlokk who held most of the ball throughout the game, errors proved costly and eventually gave Mosta a boost into the top five of the Premier League standings.

Mosta were hoping to recover after a loss to Gudja in their previous matchday. With Tyrone Farrugia suspended and Geoffrey Acheampong shipped off to Sliema Wanderers, coach Joseph Grech made wholesale changes to his side.

On the other hand, Marsaxlokk were in search of precious points after three losses and two draws in their last five matches. Christopher Edafe made way for Peter Xuereb as Pablo Doffo made just the one change from their loss to Ħamrun Spartans.

Marsaxlokk threatened first after six minutes with a Tiago Fonseca heading home but the ‘goal’ was annulled by referee Philip Farrugia after the Brazilian was stopped for a foul in the act of scoring.

Santiago Ferraris made Ini Akpan work again minutes later with a shot from the distance as Marsaxlokk held the majority of possession.

However, against the run of play, it was Mosta who opened the score on 20 minutes. Zachary Brincat benefited off a Marko Drobnjak error to hit an overhead kick into the empty net.

The southseasiders replied on the half-hour with a swift team play leading to Daniel Agius whose angled effort pushed Akpan to full stretch.

Marsaxlokk finally got their equaliser on 39 minutes when Kristian Keqi fed the ball to Leandro Aguirre on the flank as he got the best of his marker to get inside the area, and square the ball to Ayrton Attard who fired home his first goal for the club.

Agius could have made it two for Marsaxlokk just before half-time with a long-range effort that slammed the post with Akpan beaten.

After the break, it was more of Marsaxlokk as Aguirre combined with Keqi whose shot right inside the area was pushed away for a corner by Akpan.

Fifteen minutes from time, Mosta made Marsaxlokk pay for their mistakes as a miscommunication between defenders gifted the ball to Christ Ememe who sped through, dribbled past Drobnjak, and hit into the empty net.

Ememe could have made it three late on but his effort went wide, before going close again with an individual effort seconds later leading to a shot which slammed the upright.
