Defending champions Birkirkara take centre stage in Matchday 16 of the Assikura Women’s League as they will be involved in another intriguing clash, this time against Mġarr United.
The Stripes are in high spirits after their hard-fought win over Swieqi United last week, with Argentine forward Brisa Campos scoring the all-important goal.
Jose Borg’s team are now in total control of the championship race as with five games left, they boast a six-point gap above Judith Kuipers’ Swieqi United.
Swieqi, on their part, will serve a bye in this week’s slate of fixtures with Birkirkara hoping to extend their lead to nine points, at least for just one week.
Their two goals conceded in 13 games continue to highlight Birkirkara’s defensive solidity as once again they cemented their status as the team to beat.
Birkirkara have also extended their unbeaten run in the domestic league to 82 games.
Meanwhile, Mġarr United are at the back of a comfortable victory over San Ġwann, winning 6-0.
One of the goals was scored by captain Brenda Borg, who leads the club’s scoring charts with seven goals.
Yulya Carella, who joined the Greens from San Ġwann during the summer, scored a brace.
January arrival Tourki Chaimaa also found the net while Amber Grech scored their seventh goal in her return from a long-term injury sustained last season.
Hibernians, who are challenging Mġarr for a third-place finish, face San Ġwann with Raiders Lija – who are still in the third-place finish picture, cross swords with Mtarfa.
Keith Gouder’s Paolites hit Mtarfa for seven last week as they remain in third place with 22 points, having played an extra game than both Mġarr and Raiders Lija.
Raiders, led by coach Denis Guerra, launch their third round commitments against Mtarfa. They sit fifth with 16 points after 12 games played.
