Jack Borwick crowned new European Under 16 snooker champion

The highlight of the third day of the European Snooker Championship was the Under 16 final where Scottish player Jack Borwick beat Maksim Kostov of Bulgaria 3-1.

This was the first final from a series of three for the junior categories.

Wednesday’s final was played from the best of five frames and Borwick immediately built a commanding lead after winning the first two frames 69-36 and 71-30.

But in the third frame Kostov managed to pull one back when taking the game 57-17. Borwick was much more accurate in the successive frame and built a solid of 66-2 lead and Kostov conceded the frame when there were still a red and all the colors to be played.

After the final, Maxime Cassis, the president of the European Billiards and Snooker Association, and Malta Billiards and Snooker Association chief, Ivan Brincat, made the presentations to the winners.

In this category, the best break of the competition for this category was achieved by Polish player Michał Szubarczyk, who compiled a run of 60 points.

The other matches were all related to the group phase of the Under 18 competition. From the four young Maltese players in this category, Luke Pace secured a 3-0 victory over Roman Gritco, from Moldova but unfortunately this was not enough for him to make it to the Knock Out phase.

On Thursday, Pace will start his commitments in the Under 21 category along with the other two Maltese players, Jake Agius and Xavier Rizzo.

In Thursday’s programme the Under-21 competition gets underway while the Under-18’s will play the round of 16 and the quarter-finals then both the semi finals and final are scheduled for next Thursday.
