Watch: Italy’s Grifo heaps praise on newcomer Retegui after Malta goal

Italy might have found their new forward after newcomer Mateo Retegui scored his second goal in a row for the Azzurri, after opening the score against Malta in their second Euro 2024 qualifications on Sunday night.

Retegui, 23, is born in Argentina and is currently on loan from Boca Juniors to Club Atletico Tigre. He qualifies to represent the European championships through an Italian grandmother.

He scored in his debut game against England, last Thursday, and manage to put his name on the scoresheet once again with a towering header in the opening stages of the clash at Ta’ Qali.

“Mateo Retegui is a very calm and composed guy,” Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo told the media after the game.

“He was very concentrated and he deserved to score today as well, having played really well.

I can understand his excitement as a newcomer in this dressing room but we are willing to help him as he can be very useful to us.”

Grifo, who came on for the injured Wilfried Gnonto in the first half, also explained how important was for his national team to pick up their first win of the qualifying campaign.

“We know that for Malta this was a very important game but we were prepared for this and it was vital for us to secure the three points,” he said.
