Atalanta slipped up in their bid to reach next season’s Champions League after being held 1-1 at Fiorentina in Serie A on Monday.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side had the chance to move level on points with fifth-placed Inter Milan with a win in Florence and looked good after Joakim Maehle poked the away side ahead eight minutes before the break.
But Arthur Cabral earned Fiorentina a point and extended his team’s unbeaten record to 14 matches by rolling home a 56th-minute penalty following Rafael Toloi’s handball.
A win would have greatly improved sixth-placed Atalanta’s top-four hopes after Inter and AC Milan both dropped points at the weekend.
They are four points behind Milan, who sit fourth and could only draw 1-1 at Bologna on Saturday.
Fiorentina meanwhile are ninth and seven points behind the Europa Conference League spot currently held by Atalanta.
