A single goal scored by defender Jeanelle Falzon handed Mtarfa a precious victory over San Ġwann to lift them from the bottom of the Assikura Women’s League.
Led by coach Simon Spiteri, Mtarfa found the winner through Falzon’s penalty midway in the first half to secure their second win of the season – both wins were chalked against San Ġwann.
Mtarfa will wrap up their campaign against Mġarr United this Thursday, with the Greens looking to pip Hibernians to third place.
Michael Mangion’s side sit fourth on 29 points, trailing the Paolites by just two and should the Greens beat Mtarfa they would finish their season in third place.
Meanwhile, San Ġwann – who are now bottom of the table with just three points – face Birkirkara in the season finale on Saturday.
The Stripes, newly-champions of the women’s league for the 11th time, will be presented with the new trophy at the Centenary Stadium.
Jose Borg’s team were declared champions last week after Hibernians overcame Swieqi, who are second trailing the Stripes by nine points.
The Owls, on their part, will meet Raiders Lija in their final appointment of the season.
Judith Kuipers’ side will be looking to finish the season strongly before they shift their focus on the domestic cup quarter-finals where they will immediately face Birkirkara.
On the other hand, Raiders Lija are fifth with 22 points.
