Floriana FC appoint former Italy World Cup winner Camoranesi as coach

Floriana FC have announced that they have appointed former Italy World Cup winner, Mauro Camoranesi as their new first-team coach.

The Italy World Cup winner in 2006 is set to fill the void left by Italian coach Gianluca Atzori who stepped down from his post late last month.

“Floriana Football Club is delighted to announce the new Head Coach for the upcoming 2023/24 season – Mister Mauro Camoranesi,” the club said in a statement.

“Mister Camoranesi will now lead the club’s new technical project with the sole aim to help Floriana Football Club reach new heights, enhance the club’s winning mentality and create an electrifying chapter in the club’s history that will ignite passion and captivate our supporters.

“We are ready to redefine the club’s essence and embark on this exciting journey, going forward together.

“We welcome Mister Camoranesi to Floriana and we wish him the best of luck in Green and White!”

Last month, the Times of Malta reported that talks between Floriana FC and Camoranesi were at an advanced stage and that the former Juventus winger and an agreement was due.

Talks between the two parties accelerated last week, before the former Juventus winger put pen to paper yesterday.

After a glowing playing career, which saw him win a Serie A title with Juventus among others. However, the biggest moment of his career was helping Italy to the 2006 World Cup title, when defeating France in the final in Berlin.

Camoranesi is the fourth high-profile football figure to have taken the role of coach at the Greens.

In fact, in previous years, Floriana had former Perugia midfielder Giovanni Tedesco in charge of the first-team and help them win the FA Trophy in 2015.

Then, the Greens handed the reins of the team to former Fiorentina and Cagliari striker Luis Oliveira before then turning to Gianluca Atzori in 2021.

At Floriana, Camoranesi is set to be assisted by former club stalwart Brian Said who was confirmed as new assistant coach.

It is now understood that the club will start bringing in new reinforcements as they bid to bounce back from a disappointing Premier League campaign which saw them fail to challenge for a place in Europe in the championship while their FA Trophy title defence came to an end in the opening round, following a defeat to Sta Lucia.
