Teddy Teuma was named the best player of Belgium’s Pro League by livescore application Sofascore, despite Royal Union Saint-Gilloise missed out on a historic league on Sunday.
The Malta international captained Union in their final game of the season against Club Brugge, with Teuma’s side needing at least a draw should Royal Antwerp lose to Genk.
Union, whose last league title dates back to 1935, were on the brink of halting that wait as they were leading by one goal until the 89th minute, with Antwerp losing to Genk.
However, a sudden collapse by Teuma’s side saw Union lose 3-1 to Club Brugge and with Antwerp scoring a 94th-minute leveller by Tobias Alderwereild they claimed the Belgian championship.
Union not only missed out on the league title, but dropped into third place, failing to qualify to the Champions League qualifications. Instead, they will be featuring in next season’s Europa League edition.
Teuma was replaced just past the hour mark after picking up an injury.
With a rating of 7.49, Teuma topped the list of the best Belgian’s league players for the 2022/2023 produced by Sofascore, in the process making into into the league’s best eleven as well.
Throughout the season, Teuma made it 10 times into the Team of the Week. He scored 10 and registered 12 assist for Union in the championship.
