Watch: Young lifter Thornton bags two medals at Youth World Cup

Malta’s young weightlifting sensation Tenishia Thornton rewrote the country’s history books in the sport after picking up a silver and a bronze medal at the IWF Youth World Cup.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was held online. The 15-year-old Thornton competed in the 49kg category which attracted a field of 10 other weightlifters.

Thornton placed second overall in the Snatch category with a best lift of 71kg.

The young Maltese lifter finished behind Cassandra Arriaga Velez, of Mexico, who had a best lift of 72kg, and ahead of Alvarez Lopez, of Colombia, who managed 70kg.

In the Clean and Jerk, Thornton also made it on the podium when she took the bronze medal with a best attempt of 84kg for an overall total of 155kg.

This is an impressive result for the young Maltese weightlifter who went up against several top lifters hailing from countries like Romania, Indonesia, Moldova and Turkey, just to name a few.

In a statement, Jesmond Caruana, the Malta Weightlifting Association president, could not hide his satisfaction.

“This medal means huge success for the MWA,” he said.

“Thornton is now considered a world-class athlete, and despite the numerous amount of cancelled or postponed events this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she has managed to showcase her continuous hard work in a spectacular manner.”
