BOV Player of the match Bojan Kaljevic (Mosta).
Mosta were back to winning ways as they cantered past Żejtun Corinthians at the Centenary Stadium.
A goal after two minutes of play paved the way for a comfortable evening for Mosta who held the edge over the newly-promoted side who struggled to get themselves back into the match.
In fact, Mosta were well in control and never let Żejtun settle down in the match to record a deserved victory that lifted the team to fourth in the standings, on 22 points, level with Gżira Unted and with a game in hand which puts them as dark horses in the race for a European berth this season.
Mosta were off to a flying start as inside the first minute they were already in front.
Christ Ememe was upended just inside the area by Żejtun defender Lucas Moreira and referee Glen Tonna pointed to the spot. Clayton Failla stepped up drilled the ball past Christian Cassar.
Żejtun’s response arrived on 15 minutes when Marcelo Muniz’s inswinger finished just over the bar.
From then on the match fell into a lull of scoring chances as the red-shirted Mosta were containing their opponents.
Mario Muscat was forced to make his first change on 35 minutes when Zachary Brincat limped out injured and was replaced by Kevin Tulimieri.
Mosta should have doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time when Failla’s long pass picked Kaljevic who tried to lob the ball over Cassar but the Żejtun goalkeeper palmed away his attempt.
After the break, Mosta kept up the upperhand and on 55 minutes Rafael Morisco came close but his low drive flashed just wide.
It was no surprise that Mosta doubled their lead on 59 minutes. In a swift break, Mathias Muchardi raced clear and picked the sprinting Kaljevic who turned past his marker before beating Cassar with a firm drive.
Five minutes later, Johan Bezzina picked up the ball inside the area but his curling drive flew just over.
Żejtun finally threatened on 75 minutes when Dylan Agius turned past two defenders but his angled drive was pushed away by Christoffer Matoumbi.
But it was Mosta who sealed the points nine minutes from time when Ememe stormed inside the area and beat Cassar with a firm drive.
